On February 5-7, 2009, a joint symposium will be held in Utrecht to
commemorate 25 years Division of Laboratory Animal Science, 15 years
Netherlands Centre on Alternatives to Animal use, and 5 years Department
of Animals, Science and Society. More information... |

Bas Blaauboer was appointed professor for "Alternatives
to animal testing for toxicological risk assessment".
He will be looking for possibilities to eliminate the need
for ‘second species animals’. In this case, after testing on
rats or mice, a substance is tested again on a larger
mammal, such as a dog. In medical research, for example,
this second round of testing is still required by law. The
Swiss foundation "Doerenkamp-Zbinden
Foundation", which
supports research into the reduction of test animal use,
will fund the new chair for an amount of over € 1.5 million. More information... |

INVITROM has an agreement with Proefdiervrij to become a Golden Sponsor
of INVITROM. Proefdiervrij works toward replacing all scientific experiments on animals (in the Netherlands). Its focus is on the promotion of alternative methods in research. Proefdiervrij seeks to raise awareness of the plight of laboratory animals by means of promotional activities (such as petitions, leaflets, attracting media-attention) and by bilateral dialogues. The organisation urges politicians, the scientific research community, and industries to stimulate and innovate in alternative methods and replace testing on animals altogether. The 15th International Congress on In Vitro Toxicology which has been held in a
unique environment in the Stockholm archipelago, Sweden, September
25-28, 2008. The congress is a joint venture organised by ESTIV (European
Society of Toxicology In Vitro), SSCT (Scandinavian Society for Cell
